There's a sense of trust and that reduces people's defenses; there's no defensiveness when someone talks to you - even who looks different- because that's what people are supposed to do at these gatherings.That initial resistance women may have- which exists online or among strangers- seems to be a primary obstacle for Asian guys- and it's reduced a lot in these settings. Just basic comfort level with talking to people out of the blue is useful.
